Mary Mwakoi and Victoria Citalu are working at the Department of Community Development at the Civic Centre in Sinazongwe Zambia. Here they are introducing themselves and the work they are doing in the district with and for the women. Mary as the field officer tells us about the Saving-groups and Women Clubs under Community Development, 180 of them in the district, about the alternative livelihood schema and on the women's various income-generating projects. Natural resources commonly in use among the women are "Malala" Palm (for basket weaving), and indigenous fruit and vegetables, like Busika (Tamarind), Mabuyu (Baobab) and Moringa.
This interview is meant as resource to help foster relationships and exchenge among women across the Zambezi/ Kariba border. It even contains some direct messages across the lake at the end of our conversation.
In the week following this interview, we went to visit four of the local Women Clubs, got to know their project work and made many recordings of their presentations.
A page with some samples of our recordings can be found here:
We visited Mweezya and Mweka Women's Clubs, Nsenka Women's Club and Tusumpuke Saving Group. Our team: Mary Mwakoi (Community Development Sinazongwe); Monica Siabunkululu and Patience Kabuku (Zongwe FM); Claudia Wegener (radio continental drift/ Zubo Trust).
At ZongweFM station, we followed up with two broadcasts. On 22nd August, Claudia and Patience introduced recordings from the Women Forums of Zubo Trust in Binga Zimbabwe; and generally introduced our subject and interest of women getting together in groups and working as teams.
On 29 August, Monica and Patience welcomed representative of the Women Clubs and Mary Mwakoi in studio and engaging in conversation about their projects in the Clubs. The Women of Zubo Trust across the lake were also present: in recordings we played in the broadcast.
